There have been a few people asking me about these lately, so I decided to go ahead and post the guide that I was working on.

Hyperlinks (word(s) that can be clicked to go to a website)

Easy way

To use a hyperlink, click in the "http://" button above the typing box while posting.
You will then be asked what URL you are linking to. I will use Google for this example.
Next, you will be asked what you want the hyperlink to say.
Click OK and your done! You should see something like the following.

Code: Select all

Google
When posted, that code will become a hyperlink to Google. Like so: Google

Hard way

Alternately, you can manually type in the code, which is actually easier for me.

Type

Code: Select all

[url=
followed by the URL you are linking to.

Code: Select all

Do not forget to put a bracket (this thing ] ) after the URL.
Now, after that last bracket, place the word that you are using to hyperlink.

Code: Select all

Google
And now, finish it up by typing

Code: Select all

You should now have a working hyperlink that looks like this,

Code: Select all

Google
and when posted, looks like this: Google

Image hosting

I use ImageShack to host almost all of my pictures, so I will use that site for my examples.

First, you have to have the image saved to your computer and be able to find it.
Go to ImageShack and click on the "Browse" button to find that picture.
Should you decide to use it, there is an option to resize the image that you are uploading. Just click on the checkbox next to "resize image?" and select the desired size from the drop-down menu.

Now, click on the "upload" button to upload the image.

As soon as the image is uploaded, ImageShack will show you the links to your image. There are a lot of them, so I will explain them.

Thumbnail for websites: This one uses HTML code to show you a clickable small picture that will take you to the larger image. This is not used in these forums, so we will move on.

Thumbnail for forums (1): This one works with these forums. It shows a small picture that links to a big picture, but the catch is that the picture is viewed at the ImageShack website.

Thumbnal for forums (2): Same as above, but does not apply here.

Hotlink for forums (1): This will work here. What this one does, is gives you all of the code to post the whole picture in a post. The catch here, is that if you click on th picture, it will take you to ImageShack.

Hotlink for forums (2): Same as above, but doesn't apply here.

Show image to friends: This is a link to the picture to be viewed on the ImageShack website. I would have no use for this link.

Direct: This is the one that I've been waiting for! This link, is the picture, and nothing but the picture. No advertisements. This link is the one that I use the most.

Posting a picture

Easy way

Now that you know where to find the direct link, this one will be easy.

Copy the direct link.
Press the "IMG" button right above the posting box.
Paste the link.
Click OK and your done! You should now see something like this:

Code: Select all

(this exact code will generate the image above)

Hard way

Once again, this is actually easier for me.

Type:

Code: Select all

After that, paste your direct link.

Code: Select all

[img]http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/4140/untitledxk1.png
And finish it off with:

Code: Select all

[/img]
What you have now should look like this:

Code: Select all

When posted, it will be your full-sized image. (That exact code will generate the image above)

Thats my best attempt at explaining those. If you need clarification or see an error, post here or PM me and let me know. I will make it right ASAP.

I've used imagshack for as long as this board has been here. There seems to be a huge problem with there site now in that it downloads fake antivirus to your PC. First it happened at work week before last, after I uploaded a pic and getting the link to it. Didn't use it since. Now tonight at home I just clicked on it in my favorites to use it and it imediatly showed the fake AV screen and just as fast my AVG anti virus shut it down.

Now what, thats where all my online photo's are and is what I use to post them. You guys have the same problems? What are you using?

Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car. Oversteer is when you hit the wall with the back of the car. Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall.
BUT Torque is how far you take the wall with you!!

I use PhotoBucket almost exclusively these days.

Imageshack is basically the easiest way to explain uploading to someone unfamiliar with the concept, but PhotoBucket is clearly better. (MUCH more customization and organization!)

I mentioned Adblock Plus for FireFox with you in chat. The reason I recommend that is because it blocks the ads, which is where the Imageshack virus is getting through.

Actually, it's so good and unobtrusive that it's caused me confusion on a couple of client sites where we host ads. "Why aren't they showing up?! What the heck is wrong?! Oooooooh, yeah, it's blocking all that crap"

Here is my problem with Photobucket, in all the forums I go to people post pics and it seems that lots of time there will be empty boxes with the Photobucket logo in them. Another words no picture anymore and these posts maybe only 6 months old. There are pics of mine( TOCA sceen shots) that are 4yrs old and still there. That is why I'm reluctant to use Photobucket unless it's an user deal that the pics are missing.

That can happen for a few reasons, and most of the time it's user error.

When you look at the pic, it will say one of two things: (That I know of)
1. Bandwidth exceeded - Too many people have looked at pictures in his album and he's used up his monthly limit. (It's like 2gb...)
2. The pics was moved or deleted - Photobucket allows you to sort your pictures nicely, but if you move them it will leave you with a broken link. If photobucket/pyro/image is posted, and I later change it to photobucket/pyro/file/image, the first link will show that error.

Once you're used to it, it's a great resource. My only (and biggest) complaint is that they keep changing the look and feel of the site. Seems like every time I get used to the system, they change the styling and I have to find everything all over again.

Maybe give it a try for a month and see if it's to your liking?
